Blender sessions | The livingroom

Back in the days, when I was a little boy I wanted to develop programs and especially games on the computer. But in this time there weren’t many options for me to learn that. It’s not like today that everyone got a computer or laptop at home. The personal computer was a pretty rare thing in that time.

I have seen the personal computer change over the years. From a massive metal box with a giant monitor on top of it to a computer that fits in your pocket. I have had many kinds of systems. But unfortunately I have never got the chance to develop my own game. I did program all kinds of things but it was all self-taught.

When the developments on computers and software got to a point when they introduced 3d I really wanted to learn it. I tried to learn Autodesk’s “3d Studio Max“. But boy that’s a hard piece of software to learn.

After trying to work with the software for many years I just mastered the program a little bit, and I just threw the towel in the ring. Years later I came across a program that suited me better. It was called Sketchup. A 3D cat like program that was purchased by Google in a later stage. Unfortunate for people like me, Google decided to make Sketchup a paid version. And I lost interest completely.

But then came along Blender. I heard about it before because of a short movie that was made in Blender called Big Bug Bunny. When the movie came out in 2008 I download Blender and tried it but it’s completely different then 3d Studio Max so I just didn’t get it and uninstalled it again. A couple of years later I found a tutorial on YouTube.

The thing I always wanted to create is interiors. When I was young I always played around with 3d architect programs and wanted to created it myself. I started with interior design with Sketchup and was getting pretty familiar with it. Now with Blender I can finally render it in a good way as well.

Now when it comes to learning Blender I think I know about 15-20% about the program and what it can do. So I want to learn more about it. Best way to do that in my eyes is to give myself an assignment and go for it. So I decided to recreate and modify my living room. I live in a small apartment and wanted to do something with some more colour.

I am used to using textures in a 3d program. But pictures cost a lot of space, especially when using hi-res textures. But there is a way to limit the use of textures by creating so called procedural textures. This is done by using the build in materials from blender and people are able to create some of the most amazing things with it. So I decided to learn more about it by forcing myself to use as many procedural textures as possible.
